MSBBN: MN-110 or MN-510 USB Network Adapter Does Not Function

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install your MN-110 or MN-510 Universal Serial Bus (USB) network adapter, the device does not install correctly. When this issue occurs, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The lights on the device do not turn on.
  • The Microsoft Broadband Networking Setup program does not detect your adapter.
  • Microsoft Windows Device Manager lists an "unknown device" that is displayed with a yellow "!", indicating that the device is not functioning correctly.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if there is a problem with the USB controller configuration on your computer. Possible USB configuration problems include the following:
  • Windows is configured to turn off power to your USB root hub to save power.
  • USB is disabled in your computer Basic Input/Output System (BIOS).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following procedures.

Method 1: Configure Windows Not to Turn Off Power to Your USB Root Hub

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  3. In the list of devices, locate Universal Serial Bus controllers, and expand the category.

Note If this group is not present in Device Manager, go to Method 2.
  4. Double-click USB Root Hub, and then click the Power Management tab.
  5. Make sure that the Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power check box is not selected.
  6. Click OK, close all windows, and restart your computer.

Method 2: Turn on the USB in Your System BIOS

Your system BIOS is what starts the computer after you turn on the power to your computer. Software programs, such as the Windows operating system, work with the BIOS to make your computer more user friendly.

The procedure for changing BIOS settings varies depending on your computer manufacturer. Generally, there is text displayed as you start your computer (before the operating system starts) that tells you what key or keys to press to access the BIOS settings.

See the documentation that came with your computer, or contact the manufacturer for information about how to turn on the USB in your BIOS.

Important Use extreme caution when you change BIOS settings. Make one change at a time, and do not change anything that you are not sure about. Incorrect BIOS settings can cause your computer to not start.
