MSBBN: Cannot Connect to Microsoft Base Station Using an Ethernet Cable

SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect your MN-100 or MN-500 base station by using an Ethernet cable, you may experience one or more of the following behaviors:
  • The Microsoft Broadband Networking Setup program does not find the base station when you try to set up your broadband networking hardware.
  • On the base station, the light for the port that you connect to is not turned on.
  • Network and Internet resources are not available.
  • The Network Connection icon on your computer displays the following message:
    A Network Cable is unplugged

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the Ethernet cable that connects your computer to the base station is damaged, defective, or the wrong kind of cable.

RESOLUTION

To identify and resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Check the light on your base station that corresponds to the port number you connect to. If the light is not on, follow these steps:
  • Disconnect both ends of the cable, and then reconnect both ends. This step is an attempt to verify that the connection is good.
  • Plug the cable into a different port on your base station.

If the light does not turn on, you may have a damaged, defective, or incorrect cable. Use a different cable to connect to your base station.
Note: Use the blue cable that was supplied with your base station. These cables are known to be reliable.
