This step-by-step article describes how to setup a satellite modem that directly connects to a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer running Internet Connection Sharing. Windows XP connects to the base station wirelessly. Multiple other computers access the network through the base station.

Prepare the Network

1. Make sure the computer that is attached to the satellite connection does not have Internet Connection Sharing turned on.
2. Disable Internet Connection Sharing on all the client computers.
3. Disable Proxy settings on all the client computers.

Setup the Wireless Connection

1. Open the Base Station Management Tool.
   
   In the logon box, type your password. The default password is admin.
2. Click Wireless, and then click to select the Enable wireless access check box.
   
   Note By default, this box is typically checked.
3. If you want to change the wireless channel, click a number in the Wireless channel number drop-down list box.
4. If you want to change the network name, type a new network name in the Wireless network name (SSID) box.
   
   The network name is case sensitive and cannot be more than 32 characters.
5. Click Apply to save the changes.
6. In the Base Station Management Tool, click Security.
7. If you want to use WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) security, on the Security menu, click Wireless Security.
   1. Click Enable wireless security.
   2. In the Encryption strength drop-down list box, click 128-bit or 64-bit.
   3. In the first Key box, type an encryption key.
      
      Encryption keys contain hexadecimal digits that are numbers 0 through 9 or letters in the range A through F.
   4. If you selected 64-bit encryption, in the Key index drop-down list box, set the Key index to 1.
      
      The key index number indicates which of up to four WEP keys will be enabled on the network.
   5. To turn on the wireless encryption, click Apply.
8. In the Base Station Management Tool, click Security, and then click Network Mode.
9. Set to Bridging mode.
   
   Allow the Base Station to restart, do not interrupt the restart.

Note Bridging mode limits the functionality of the base station. It disables many base station security features, including the firewall, client filtering, port forwarding, the virtual perimeter network (also known as DMZ, demilitarized zone, and screened subnet), and the base station log. Additionally, you cannot use the Base Station Management Tool when you set the base station to bridging mode.

Setup Internet Connection Sharing on the Computer with the Satellite Connection

Note If you are setting this up on a computer with the Microsoft Windows 98 operating system you must have your Windows 98 CD-rom disk.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
2. Click the dial-up connection, local area network, PPPoE, or VPN connection that you want to share, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.
4. Under Internet Connection Sharing, in Home networking connection, select any adapter that connects the computer sharing its Internet connection to the other computers on your network. (The Home networking connection is only present when two or more network adapters are installed on the computer).

Note To turn on Internet Connection Sharing Discovery and Control on Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition-based computers, run the Network Setup Wizard from the CD or floppy disk on these computers.

Note This information only works with two-way Satellite connections.
