You cannot build an OLAP cube in Microsoft Project Server 2002

SYMPTOMS

When you try to generate an OLAP cube, you may receive one of the following error messages:
VBScript: Microsoft Project Web Access could not connect to the OLAP server specified.
Error Code 9104
The cube scheduled to be built on date at time failed. (-2147221455) Unable to connect to the registry on the server SQL Analysis server name, or you are not a member of the OLAP Administrators group on this server.
The last message appears in the Current Cube Status section.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you have applied the Microsoft SQL Server Service Pack 3, but you have not applied the matching Service Pack for SQL Analysis Services.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install SQL Analysis Service Pack 3:
  1. Visit the following SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 Web page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=90dcd52c-0488-4e46-afbf-acace5369fa3 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=90dcd52c-0488-4e46-afbf-acace5369fa3)
  2. Scroll down to the Files in this Download section, and then click the Sql2ksp3.exe file.
  3. In the File Download dialog box, click Save.
  4. In the Save As dialog box, specify a location on your computer to save the file, and then click Save.
  5. In the Download Complete dialog box, click Open.
  6. In the Installation Folder dialog box, click Finish. Click Yes to create the C:\Sql3ksp3 folder.
  7. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, click Explore, browse to the C:\Sql2ksp3\X86\Setup folder, and then double-click SetupSQL.exe.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the service pack.
  9. Install SQL Analysis Service Pack 3. To do this, repeat steps 1 through 8, with the following exceptions:
    1. In step 2, click the Sql2kasp3.exe file.
    2. In step 7, browse to the C:\Sql2ksp3\Msolap\Install folder, and then double-click Setup.exe to install SQL Analysis Service Pack 3.
Note If you installed Project Server in a distributed configuration where Project Server and SQL Analysis Services are installed on different computers, apply Microsoft SQL Server Service Pack 3 (Sql2kasp3.exe) to update your Decision Support Object for SQL Analysis on your Project Server computer.

Note Additionally, in Microsoft Project Server Web Access, you must migrate the Analysis Services repository to a Microsoft SQL Server database and grant permissions to the Microsoft Project Server\Bin\1033 folder. For more information about how to migrate the Analysis Services and grant the necessary permissions to the Microsoft Project Server\Bin\1033 folder, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

To determine if Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 and SQL Server 2000 Analysis Service Pack 3 have been installed, follow these steps: Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and then click support information. In the Support Info dialog box, examine the product version. If Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 is installed, the version will be 8.00.760.
  3. Click Close, click Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, and then click support information. If Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Service Pack 3 is installed, the version will be 8.00.760.
