Links in the Table of Contents do not work in Producer for PowerPoint 2002

This article was previously published under Q318777

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Microsoft Producer presentation in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the "Table of Contents" does not work. When you click a link to jump to a specific point in the presentation, nothing happens.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a limitation in Microsoft Windows Media Player, version 6.x. The player cannot seek across a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connection.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, install Microsoft Windows Media Player, version 7.x or later on your computer.

Note You cannot install Windows Media Player, version 7.x in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Windows Media Player, version 6.4 is the latest version available for Windows NT 4.0. Therefore, in Windows NT 4.0, you cannot use the table of contents to navigate during playback of a presentation.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, publish your media files from a Microsoft Windows 2000 server that is running Windows Media Services. The server will stream the files instead of making them directly accessible through HTTP on a Web server.

To specify your Web server and Windows Media server configuration, use the Publish Wizard in Producer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The following information comes from the Microsoft Producer, version 1.0 release notes (Relnote.doc):
Windows Media Player 6.4 cannot seek when playing from HTTP. This is a general problem with any Windows Media file accessed via HTTP. If a table of contents entry in a presentation points to the middle of a media file, the presentation will play from the beginning of the media file instead. With Windows Media Player 7.0, the table of contents entries will work properly once the entire media file is downloaded.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Producer for PowerPoint 2002, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Standard Edition
    • Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
    • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a
