PRJ2000: How to Open an MSDE-Hosted Microsoft Project Central Database in Microsoft Access

SUMMARY
When you use a Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) database to host a Microsoft Project Central database, you may be unable to open the database.
This article explains how to open your MSDE-hosted Microsoft Project Central database in Microsoft Access. This configuration also allows you to edit the Microsoft Project Central database.

To open the Microsoft Project Central database in Microsoft Access, follow these steps:
- Quit all running programs.
- Start Microsoft Access. Click Cancel in the Microsoft Access dialog box that appears.
- On the File menu, click New.
- Click Project (Existing Database), and then click OK.
- In the File name box, type the file name that you want (for example, ProjectCentral), and then click Create.
- In the Data Link Properties dialog box that appears, type the name of the MSDE server in the Select or enter a server name box. To determine the name of the database server, follow these steps:
- In the status area of the taskbar, right-click the MSSQLServer icon, and then click Open SQL Server Service Manager on the shortcut menu that appears.
NOTE: If the MSSQLServer icon is not displayed on the taskbar, click Start, point to Programs, point to MSDE, and then click Service Manager. - In the Server list, note the name of the MSDE server.
- Close the SQL Server Service Manager dialog box.
- Do one of the following:
- Click Use Windows NT Integrated security.
-or- - Click Use a specific user name and password. In the User name box, type sa. If you have created a password for the sa account, click to clear the Blank password check box, and then type the password in the Password box.
- In the Select the database on the server list, select Project_CentralDB, and then click Test Connection.
NOTE: Project_CentralDB is the default database that is created when you install Microsoft Project Central. However, if you manually created a database with a different name by running the SQL scripts from the Microsoft Project Central CD-ROM, select it instead. - Click OK in response to the "Test connection succeeded" message that appears, and then click OK.
The Microsoft Project Central tables are opened in Microsoft Access.
