FIX: Upgrading from Visual Studio .NET 1.0 Beta 2 to RTM breaks common language runtime performance counters in Windows XP and Windows 2000

This article was previously published under Q306722

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Beta 2 or Microsoft .NET Framework Beta 2, the .NET common language runtime performance counters do not function correctly.

NOTE: To maintain a supported configuration, it is strongly recommended that you uninstall the beta version of Visual Studio .NET or Microsoft .NET Framework through the Add/Remove Programs application in Control Panel before you install the released version. If you are running Windows Server 2003 Beta 3 or later, the .NET Framework is installed with the operating system and cannot be removed. In this case, follow the steps in the "Resolution" section.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Ensure that the RTM build is installed on the computer through the Microsoft .NET Software Development Kit (SDK) setup, .NET Redist, or Visual Studio .NET.
  2. At a command prompt, type unlodctr .NETFramework.
  3. At a command prompt, type lodctr %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\CORPerfMonSymbols.ini.
The .NET common language runtime performance counters should now be functional. To verify this, run Perfmon, and click Add. The above-mentioned .NET common language runtime performance counter categories should appear.

MORE INFORMATION

This article only applies to computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000 (Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98 do not have performance counters) with .NET Common Language Runtime Beta 2 installed (through the .NET SDK, .NET Redist, or Visual Studio .NET) and that contain the following .NET common language runtime performance counters:
  • .NET Common Language Runtime Exceptions
  • .NET Common Language Runtime Interop
  • .NET Common Language Runtime Jit
  • .NET Common Language Runtime Loading
  • .NET Common Language Runtime LocksAndThreads
  • .NET Common Language Runtime Memory
  • .NET Common Language Runtime Remoting
  • .NET Common Language Runtime Security

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Common Language Runtime (included with the .NET Framework) 1.0
  • Microsoft .NET Framework Software Development Kit 1.0 Service Pack 2
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 Enterprise Architect
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 Enterprise Developer
  • Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 Academic Edition
