You receive an "Error 25506" error message when you run the Office XP Setup program

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Setup program for Microsoft Office XP, you receive the following error message:
Error 25506. Microsoft program name requires updated system files not detected on your computer. You must install the Microsoft Office 2002 System Files Update prior to installing program name. File name is version version when we require version version.
NOTE: In this error message, program name is the Office XP program that you are installing, and version is the version of the file name file that is installed.

When you click OK, Setup closes.

If you try to run Setup again, the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box for the System Files Update appears. This dialog box includes the options Repair the System Files Update and Uninstall the System Files Update. If you select Repair the System Files Update, the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box for the System Files Update appears again the next time that you run Setup for Office. If you select Uninstall the System Files Update, you receive the error message.

Text similar to the following appears in the Windows Installer log file for the System Files Update installation:

Error 25506. Microsoft Publisher 2002 requires updated system files not
 detected on your computer. You must install the Microsoft Office 2002
 System Files Update prior to installing Publisher.
 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ASYCFILT.DLL is version 2.40.4275.1 when we require 
version 2.40.4277.1.
Action ended 9:55:49: OSPNeedUpgrade. Return value 3.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, run the Oainst.exe file from your Microsoft Office XP program CD-ROM to install the file that is specified in the error message that you received. Then run the Office Setup program again. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert your CD-ROM for your Microsoft Office XP program. Hold down SHIFT to stop Setup from automatically starting, or click Cancel when Setup runs.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer. In Microsoft Windows NT, point to Programs, point to the Accessories folder, and then click Windows Explorer.
  3. Open your CD-ROM drive, and then navigate to the following folder:
    drive\Files\Osp\1033\IE5\En
  4. Double-click Oainst.exe to install the OLE automation update. The following files will be installed:
    • Advpack.dll
    • Oainst.inf
    • Asycfilt.dll
    • Oleaut32.dll
    • Olepro32.dll
    • Stdole2.tlb
    • Regtlib.exe
    • W95inf32.dll
    • W95inf16.dll
  5. Run Setup again.
