INFO: Event ID: 4021 Cluster Controller Change Failed

This article was previously published under Q288293

SUMMARY

Event ID: 4021
Source: Application Center
Description: Could not change to new controller.
Event Type: Error

Application Center was unable to change to the new controller. Either the new controller is not available or the name is incorrect. The error code is %Status%%StatusMessage%.

Meaning: Application Center was unable to change to the new controller.

Effect: If the previous controller is not available, you must promote another controller. Even if the previous controller is available, the cluster might not be able to use it automatically. Any problems with the intended controller must be fixed before the member can be used as the controller.

Possible Causes and Solutions

Invalid permissions: The access permissions or network privileges are invalid or have been changed on the remote server.

Server not available: The member is not turned on, has been renamed, or has been disconnected from the network.

Network failure: A network failure ended the connection between the controller and the cluster member.

Hardware failure: A hardware failure has occurred, such as a disk or network adapter failure.

Configuration store (metabase) corrupt: The store that Application Center uses for configuration data is corrupted or unavailable. Restart the IIS Admin service by using the Services utility in Administrative Tools. If this problem persists, contact your support personnel.

Possible Solutions (listed in order of preference):

  1. Restart the other computer.
  2. Restart the cluster controller.
  3. Use the Support Online link in the Events view.
  4. Contact Microsoft Product Support Services:

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.
