PRJ2000: Microsoft Project Stops Responding When You Save or Open Projects Stored in an SQL Database

SYMPTOMS

When you save or open projects that are stored in an SQL database, Microsoft Project may quit unexpectedly, or you may receive one of the following error messages, depending on your operating system.

Microsoft Windows 2000

Winproj.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.
-or-
The instruction at memory address referenced memory at memory address. The memory could not be 'written'. Click on OK to terminate the program.
-or-
The instruction at memory address referenced memory at memory address. The memory could not be 'read'. Click on OK to terminate the program.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Winproj.exe
Exception: access violation (address), Address: address

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Winproj has caused an error in PJ9OD9.dll.
Winproj will close.

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer.

Microsoft Windows 98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If this problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive the following message:
Winproj caused an invalid page fault in module Winproj.exe at memory address.

CAUSE

This error message may occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • You are saving or opening a project that shares resources from a resource pool.
  • The sharing project and the resource pool are stored in an SQL database.
  • The sharing project contains a large number of task notes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, save the projects in the Microsoft Project 2000 .MPP format, rather than to an SQL database.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
