The default font is not changed when you apply a template to the selected slides in PowerPoint
This article was previously published under Q285518
SYMPTOMS
When you apply a new slide design template to a slide in
Microsoft PowerPoint, the default font of that slide is not changed to the
default font of the newly-selected template as expected.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when you apply a design template to
selected slides in the presentation.
The default font of the new
template is not used because the default font is based on the default font of
the first slide master in the presentation.
MORE INFORMATION
The Default Font is a per-document setting and is not
controlled by the formatting of the applied design. This default font affects
text that is placed into any text boxes. To change the default font for text
boxes, follow these steps depending on your version of PowerPoint:
PowerPoint 2002 and PowerPoint 2003
- On the View menu, click Normal.
- After ensuring that no objects or text in the presentation
are selected, change the font attributes that you want on the Formatting toolbar.
Note If the Formatting toolbar does not appear, click View, point to Toolbars, and then click Formatting.
PowerPoint 2007
- On the Design tab, click Fonts in the Themes group.
- After ensuring that no objects or text in the presentation
are selected, change the font attributes that you want in the Fonts list.
These changes are now part of the default formatting that is used in
any new text boxes that are created throughout the presentation. Text boxes that were created
before you changed the default font are not affected.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
- Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 Standard Edition

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
