PPT2002: Error Message: "No Video Capture Devices Installed" When You Record Online Broadcast

This article was previously published under Q285478

SYMPTOMS

When you click Record in the Record Presentation Broadcast dialog box, the following error message appears in the Status section of the Broadcast Presentation message box:
PowerPoint could not connect to the Windows Media
Encoder.
Press Retry to try again.
If you click the Details button, an error message similar to the following appears:
The Windows Media Encoder returned the following error message to PowerPoint:
drive:\My Documents\My Broadcasts\user\.... No video capture devices are installed. Please contact your system administrator for help regarding this Windows Media Encoder error.

CAUSE

PowerPoint by default assumes that your computer has both audio and video capturing capabilities. If you do not have a video capture device installed and configured in the computer, you receive the error message listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the Record Presentation Broadcast configuration settings to Audio only. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start PowerPoint.
  2. On the Slide Show menu, point to Online Broadcast, and then click Settings.
  3. On the Presenter tab, under Audio/Video, click Audio only, then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

For more information about recording an online broadcast, click Microsoft PowerPoint Help on the Help menu, type broadcast in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
