SYMPTOMS

When you use the Send command on the File menu, the SendObject method, or the SendObject action, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Access can't open the mail session. Check your mail application to make sure that it's working properly.

CAUSE

You may receive this error message when you install Microsoft Access 97 after you install Microsoft Office 2000 and then try to use Access to send an object through your e-mail program.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, delete the following registry key. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
  2. Delete the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common\MapiDLL

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. On a Windows 98-based computer, install Office 2000.
  2. Install Access 97.
  3. In Access 97, open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
  4. In the Database window, click the Employees table, and then click Send on the File menu.

    Note that you receive the error message that is mentioned in "Symptoms" section of this article.

I went to the registry but don't have the line to delete. I am using Win XP, any ideas?

Yes, same here. Win XP. No such line anywhere in registry. Installed: A97, then Access 2002.

same here, using win xp, only installed access 97, not 2000....

Also have had this prob, solved mine by replacing "mapi32.dll" 710kb 30/7/77 in "Win\System32" dir with "MAPI32.DLL" 135kb 10/12/02.
