BUG: Uninstalling Application Center 2000 Does Not Remove Member from Cluster

This article was previously published under Q277892

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

If you uninstall Application Center 2000 on a server that is currently a member of an Application Center 2000 cluster, the uninstall procedure does not remove the server from the cluster. You may still see the server icon showing up as part of the cluster in the Application Center 2000 administrator. If you reinstall Application Center 2000 on the server and attempt to rejoin the cluster, the add member process will fail because it will appear to already be a member of the cluster.

CAUSE

The uninstall procedure does not check to see if the server is a member of a cluster, nor does it attempt to remove the server from a cluster.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft recommendeds that you remove a server from a cluster before you uninstall Application Center 2000. If you accidentally uninstall Application Center 2000 on a cluster member, you should run the Application Center 2000 administration tool, connect to the cluster master, and then remove the server from the cluster. You may receive the following error message:
Unable to remove cluster member 'SERVER' Some settings on the cluster member could not be removed (0xC0140038)
This error is expected; click OK to allow the removal to complete.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

NOTE: It is not suggested that you try this.
  1. Create a cluster with at least two members.
  2. Use Control Panel/Add Remove programs to uninstall Application Center 2000.
Observe that the member server is still shown in the Application Center 2000 administrator.
