PRJ: Missing Tasks When You Delete a Task in a Calendar View

This article was previously published under Q245903

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, in a calendar view, when you delete a task, other tasks may appear to be deleted.

In other views, such as the Gantt Chart view, the tasks that appeared to have been deleted are still displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You are in a calendar view.
  • You delete a task that has successor tasks.
  • The successors of that task are displayed on the same calendar row as other tasks that start at the beginning of the project.
  • The Autolink inserted or moved tasks check box is cleared (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Schedule tab).
When Microsoft Project reschedules the successor tasks of the task that is deleted, it draws them on the same row, and on top of, existing tasks. This makes the tasks that were first scheduled on those dates appear as if they are missing.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method for your situation.

Method 1: Re-Layout the View

On the Format menu, click Layout Now.

NOTE: This redraws the tasks in the calendar view. If you have manually arranged tasks in your calendar view, you may have to repeat rearranging the tasks, or use workaround 2 instead.

Method 2: Manually Move the Tasks

If multiple tasks are drawn on the same row for one or more days, manually move the tasks to a new row. To do this, click the border of the task and drag it down to a new row.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Project 2000 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Project 98 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Project 4.0 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Project 4.1 Standard Edition
