Article ID: 2346270 - Last Review: October 14, 2010 - Revision: 2.0 You receive a "Stop error 0xC0000244 {Audit Failed}" error message during the shutdown process after you enable the CrashOnAuditFail setting on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista Consider the following scenario: - You enable the CrashOnAuditFail setting on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
- You try to shut down or restart the computer.
In this scenario, you receive a stop error message that resembles the following: 0xc0000244 - {Audit Failed}
An attempt to generate a security audit failed.
Note The first parameter of the stop code is 0xC0000008. This issue is caused by a race condition during the shutdown process. The Local Security Authority (LSA) tries to write an audit event in the event logs after the event log service has stopped in response to the request of the operating system shutdown. If CrashOnAuditFail is configured correctly, then the operating system triggers the stop code that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. Hotfix information A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix. If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft website: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language. PrerequisitesTo apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Hotfix replacement informationThis hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix. File informationThe global version of this hotfix installs files that have the attributes that are listed in the following tables. The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notesImportant Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
