Server Extensions Configuration Wizard Stops Responding During Installation

This article was previously published under Q231993

SYMPTOMS

When you click Configure Server Extensions from the Task menu in the IIS Microsoft Management Console, there is a delay in the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard and the wizard appears to stop responding.

CAUSE

If there is a large number of virtual servers on the computer or there are performance constraints, this behavior can occur.

The number of virtual servers and types of performance constraints may vary, based on the Web server's configuration.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To obtain SR-1/SR-1a, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
245025  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=245025/EN-US/ ) OFF2000: How to Obtain and Install Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a)

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, there are two options:

Configure the Server Extensions using the wizard in the Internet Service Manager. Although the Wizard may appear to stop responding when you move from the first screen of the wizard, "Welcome to the Server Extensions Configuration Wizard" to the next screen, it will eventually move to the second screen, and you can finish the installation.

-OR-

Install the Server Extensions using the Fpsrvadm.exe command line utility. The Fpsrvadm.exe command line utility does not experience any delay when installing the Server Extensions.

To install the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions to a virtual server using the command line utility, do the following:
  1. Click Start, click Programs, and choose Command Prompt.
  2. Change the directory to c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\40\bin.
  3. To install the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions to a virtual server with the host name sample.microsoft.com, with an initial Administer account of Administrator, enter the following syntax:
    fpsrvadm -o install -t msiis -p 80 -m sample.microsoft.com -u Administrator
  4. There is additional information on how to use the Fpsrvadm.exe command line utility in the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions Resource Kit (SERK). The SERK is not installed by default, but can be added by using Add/Remove in Control Panel and Selecting FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions or FrontPage 2000, depending on the installation. The SERK is also available online at the following location:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
