Consider the following scenario:

• You enable the following Group Policy setting on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2):
  Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Options\Shutdown: Clear virtual memory page file
• You try to shut down the computer.

In this scenario, the computer may stop responding.

This issue occurs because of a system page table entry (PTE) leak.

When the shutdown process occurs, the Windows memory manager tries to zero out all the page files in a loop. In each cycle of the loop, the memory manager uses the same memory descriptor list (MDL) variable to zero out the page files. However, the reuse of the MDL causes a system PTE leak when a storage driver calls the MmGetSystemAddressForMdlSafe macro to map the MDL to the system space. Therefore, the system stops responding after a while.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
