Slow RDP logon caused by large WMI repository size

System TipThis article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you.Visit the Windows Vista Solution Center

Symptoms

You may notice slow RDP logons on a Windows Server 2003 computer. If you enable Userenv logging on the problem server, it shows a delay related to Resultant Set of Policy (RSoP).

USERENV(5fa0.47b4) 10:58:47:509 AllocAdmFileInfo: Adding File name <\\contoso.com\sysvol\contoso.com\Policies\{63C4E095-EDDF-42EB-9BF3-4732623F705F}\Adm\wuau.adm> to the Adm list.
USERENV(5fa0.47b4) 10:59:23:165 LogRegistry RsopData: Successfully logged registry Rsop data
For more information on how to enable Userenv logging, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
221833 How to enable user environment debug logging in retail builds of Windows

Cause

This issue may occur if RSoP logging is enabled and there is a large WMI repository on the problem server. The WMI repository is located at the following location:

%windir%\System32\Wbem\Repository

RSoP uses the CIMOM database through WMI. When a computer logs on to a network, information such as the computer hardware, Group Policy Software Installation settings, Internet Explorer Maintenance settings, Scripts, Folder Redirection settings, and Security Settings, are written to the CIMOM database. When you start RSoP in logging mode, RSoP reports policy settings that have been applied using the information provided in the CIMOM database.

For more information on RSoP, see the following Microsoft website:

RSoP Overview
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc778752(WS.10).aspx

Resolution

Disable RSoP logging to resolve this issue. RSoP logging is enabled by default. For information on how to disable RSoP logging, see the following Microsoft website:

RSoP Logging
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc783154(WS.10).aspx

Note: Disabling RSoP logging will prevent you from running the RSoP snap-in (rsop.msc) on that computer. You can get RSoP modeling information using the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) if needed.

Rebuilding the WMI repository will resolve the issue for some time but it may eventually grow back to the same size and cause logon delays again.
