PPT97: Conflict with NeoMagic 128XD Graphics Chip

This article was previously published under Q195097

SYMPTOMS

While working with a PowerPoint presentation, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, you receive the following error message:
Powerpoint caused a general protection fault in module NMGC.DRV at 0001:00003a36.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a conflict with the NeoMagic video driver.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must obtain an updated driver from your video card manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer of your video card to determine if there are newer versions available. The phone number should be in the manuals that came with the video card or with your personal computer.

To temporarily work around this problem, you can disable video acceleration by following these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and click Graphics.
  4. Move the Acceleration slider bar to None.
  5. Click OK twice.
  6. When you are prompted, click Yes to restart your system.

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
