PPT97: Spelling Check Fails in Text Box
This article was previously published under Q191244
On This Page
SYMPTOMS
PowerPoint 97 may fail to detect spelling errors in a text box although
the text is formatted with the correct language and the spelling checker
for this language is installed.
CAUSE
PowerPoint 97 can only check the spelling of text that is in the same
code page that is currently set as the system's default code page. For
example, if the current Windows code page is 1252 (Western), PowerPoint
can check the spelling of text in English, French, German, or Spanish,
but not Greek or Russian. If the current code page is 1253 (Greek),
PowerPoint can check the spelling of Greek text only but not Western
European or Russian text.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, you can change the system code page by
changing the default region in the Regional Settings Control Panel.
NOTE: You must check the spelling of text for each code page separately.
Therefore, if you have text in mixed languages that is not supported by
the same code page, you will have to check each language separately.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
