SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Plus! 98, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred while Setup was copying files. Your Setup location may be corrupt or missing files. Microsoft Plus! 98 was not fully installed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons:

  • Third-party software is interfering with Plus! 98 Setup.
  • Too many files and folders are contained in the root folder of your hard disk.
  • The Plus! 98 CD-ROM is damaged or needs cleaning.
  • DMA is disabled on your CD-ROM drive.
  • Your CD-ROM drive is not properly configured.

RESOLUTION

To troubleshoot this issue, use the following methods in the order they appear. If the issue continues to occur when you complete a method, proceed to the next method.

Quit Unnecessary Programs

Quit all unnecessary programs that are running on the computer. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to open the Close Program dialog box.
  2. Quit all programs except Explorer and Systray (which are parts of Windows). To quit a program, click the program, and then click End Task.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 until all unnecessary programs are no longer running.
  4. Disable any anti-virus or disk tool programs installed on the computer. For information about how to disable these programs, see the printed or online documentation for the program.

Clean the CD-ROM

To clean the Plus! 98 CD-ROM, gently wipe the silver side of the CD-ROM with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth. Do not use paper cloth which can scratch the plastic and leave streaks. When you clean the CD-ROM, wipe from the center of the disc outward; do not use a circular motion.

Move Files and Folders Out of Root Folder

Move some files or folders from the root folder of your hard disk into other folders on your computer, or delete unnecessary files or folders from the root folder of your hard disk.

Enable CD-ROM Drive DMA

To enable DMA on your CD-ROM drive, follow these steps:

  1. On the desktop, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Device Manager tab, double-click the CDROM branch to expand it.
  3. Double-click the CD-ROM drive you want to use to install Plus! 98.
  4. On the Settings tab, click to select the DMA check box, and then click OK.
  5. When you receive the following warning message, click OK:
Changing this setting may have undesirable effects with your hardware. Contact your hardware vendor to ensure that this setting is supported.
  6. Click Close.
  7. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
After you restart the computer, verify that the DMA check box in CDROM properties is selected.

Copy Installation Files and Install Plus! 98 from Hard Disk

To copy the Plus! 98 installation files to a folder on the hard disk and then install Plus! 98 from that folder, follow these steps:

  1. Create or update a Windows 98 Startup Disk. For information about how to do this, see the Startup Disk topic in the online Help file.
  2. Insert the Windows 98 Startup Disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer.
  3. On the Startup menu, select "Start computer with CD-ROM support," and then press ENTER.
  4. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER
    <drive>:\
where <drive> is the letter of a hard disk with at least 285 MB of available disk space, in addition to the hard disk space required by Plus! 98 Setup.
  5. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:
    md plus98cd
    cd\windows\command
  6. Insert the Plus! 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  7. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER
    xcopy <cdrom>:\*.* <drive>:\plus98cd\*.* /s
where <cdrom> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive and <drive> is the letter of the hard disk on which you created the Plus98cd folder.
  8. When you finish copying the files, eject the Windows 98 Startup Disk from the floppy disk drive, and then press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart the computer.
  9. Click Start, and then click Run.
  10. In the Open box, type the following line, and then click OK
    <drive>:\plus98cd\setup.exe
where <drive> is the letter of the hard disk on which the Plus98cd folder is located.
  11. Follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing Plus! 98.

MORE INFORMATION

A maximum of 512 entries (files or folders) can be contained in the root folder on your hard disk. Because long file names require additional entries in the file allocation table, the root folder may be full even if it contains less than 512 entries.
