SYMPTOMS

When you start Internet Explorer, your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using Internet Explorer on an IBM ThinkPad 760CD laptop computer that has a Mwave modem, and you have installed the Internet Explorer Sound Pack. Early versions of the IBM ThinkPad 760CD laptop computer's BIOS and Mwave drivers are not compatible with the Internet Explorer Sound Pack.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

Method 1

Uninstall the Internet Explorer Sound Pack. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
182980  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=182980/EN-US/ ) How to Disable Internet Explorer 4.0 Sound Pack

Method 2

Update your computer's BIOS and obtain the latest Mwave drivers. For information about how to do so, contact IBM.

For information about how to contact IBM, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior can also occur when you click Close on the "Welcome - Microsoft Internet Explorer" screen.
The Internet Explorer Sound Pack is an Internet Explorer component that you can install using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel after Internet Explorer is installed.

For information about how to add or remove Internet Explorer components, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
