XL97: "Before You Save..." Error When Quitting Program
This article was previously published under Q177857
When you try to quit Microsoft Excel, the following error message appears
in the Office Assistant balloon:
Before you save...
Other people may not have the latest version of Office, so if you
plan to share this file, you should save it in the following format:
Microsoft Excel 97 & 5.0/95 workbook
- Use suggested format
- Don't use suggested format
- See what might be lost
This message appears when you do the following:
- You save the workbook in the Microsoft Excel 97 & 5.0/95 Workbook
format.
-and-
- You quit the program.
This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) and Microsoft Excel 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2).
Microsoft Excel 97 (non-SR-1) does not display an alert message under the same circumstances, but you instead receive the Save As dialog box with the Save As Type option incorrectly set to "Microsoft Excel Workbook (*.xls)." The following tables describe when Excel 97 SR-1 and Excel 97 SR-2 display
balloon alert messages for the default save.
In the following tables, an "UnSaved" workbook is one that you have not
saved during the current session of Excel (for example, an unsaved new
workbook or a workbook that you have changed but have not saved). A "Saved"
workbook is one that you have saved during the current session. A workbook
is considered "dirty" if you have made any changes to it in the current
session.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each

edits), please consult a professional.
