Task link lost when task moved to new location

This article was previously published under Q173754

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you move or drag a linked task from one row to another row, the link between the tasks breaks. For example, if your project contains two tasks, T1 and T2, which are linked together with a Finish-To-Start relationship, and you move T2 to row 4, the task information is copied, but the link between the tasks breaks.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Autolink inserted or moved tasks option on the Schedule tab is selected. (Click Options on the Tools menu.)

WORKAROUND

To maintain links when you move a task to another row, turn off the Autolink inserted or moved tasks option, using these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Schedule tab.
  3. Click to clear the Autolink inserted or moved tasks check box.
  4. Click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

"Autolink Inserted or Moved Tasks" Option Selected

When you move or insert a task within another series of linked tasks, the task will be linked within the new series. For example, if you have three tasks--Task1, Task2, and Task3--linked together, and you move a fourth task, Task4, between Task 2 and Task3, the new link order will be Task1, Task2, Task4, and Task3.

When you move or insert a task within another series of linked tasks, the task will be linked in the new series.

When you move or insert a task in a new location that is not within a group of tasks, a link will not be created. For example, if you have two tasks, Task1 and Task2, which are linked together, and you move Task2 down one row, the two tasks will no longer be linked.

"Autolink Inserted or Moved Tasks" Option Not Selected

When this option is turned off, the link will be retained when you move a task, regardless of where you move it.
