XFOR: Err Msg: (RAS) Phone Book Cannot Be Opened
This article was previously published under Q168292
When you attempt to access the Dial-up connections property page,
the following error message appears:
The Remote Access Service (RAS) phone book cannot be opened. It must be
accessible and in the system directory as
\winnt\system32\ras\rasphone.pbk
You can successfully start the remote access service (RAS) from a command
line, and Winnt\System32\Ras\Rasphone.pbk exists and is accessible.
The IMCAdmin extension attempts to open Rasphone.pbk based on a relative
path from the ADMIN$ share. If this share is missing or has been removed
the IMCAdmin extension will be unable to access the Rasphone.pbk file. This
path is hardcoded into the following extension:
\\servername\admin$\system32\ras\rasphone.pbk
If the location of this file changes you will receive this error message.
APPLIES TO

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
